Tug of War, the song, was released as the second single from the project on September 16th 2008, prior to the release of the album later that month on September 30th. Release as Jepsen's debut single on June 16th 2008, Sunshine On My Shoulders additionally served as the lead single for the album. The album cover was photographed by Rico Amezquita, with additional photography and design by Mario Vaira. The Tug of War album cover features Jepsen framed from the shoulders up, looking off into the distance the full, uncropped image shows Jepsen holding her guitar. The album would first be reissued in Japan on May 19th 2010 under Surfolk International, and would see a full worldwide distribution under 604 Records in 2011 upon Jepsen's signing to the label the year prior. Tug of War was announced by Jepsen over MySpace in August 2008 and released whilst she was an independent artist, in a distribution deal with MapleMusic Recordings via Fontana North, on September 30th 2008 in Canada.
