Tug of War, the song, was released as the second single from the project on September 16th 2008, prior to the release of the album later that month on September 30th. Release as Jepsen's debut single on June 16th 2008, Sunshine On My Shoulders additionally served as the lead single for the album. The album cover was photographed by Rico Amezquita, with additional photography and design by Mario Vaira. The Tug of War album cover features Jepsen framed from the shoulders up, looking off into the distance the full, uncropped image shows Jepsen holding her guitar. The album would first be reissued in Japan on May 19th 2010 under Surfolk International, and would see a full worldwide distribution under 604 Records in 2011 upon Jepsen's signing to the label the year prior. Tug of War was announced by Jepsen over MySpace in August 2008 and released whilst she was an independent artist, in a distribution deal with MapleMusic Recordings via Fontana North, on September 30th 2008 in Canada.

Of all songs written previously, Sweet Talker is a notable example as it was performed by Jepsen during her Idol audition in 2007.īefore the album's release, Jepsen described Tug of War as a perfect representation of her as an artist, placing special emphasis on her involvement as either a writer or cowriter of every song on the album, with the exception of Sunshine On My Shoulders, the only cover song on the album. Most of Tug of War would have been written in the years previous, described by Jepsen as 'old bar songs', with new songs being written during the development of the album as well. The majority of the album would be co-written and produced by Ryan Stewart Jepsen states it wasn't until she met Stewart that she regained her footing after her time on Canadian Idol. Development on Tug of War would begin sometime after Jepsen's appearance on Canadian Idol in 2007.
